Cat Health Problems Explained by by Wayne T

Here are some diseases that you should watch for and their symptoms.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is the disease most feared, and in fact, is the leading cause of death in cats. It is caused by a coronavirus infection and the worst is that the symptoms are very common with other ailments, so it's really hard to tell.

There is also Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) which is similar to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Like the human version, is a life long infection that moves slowly and can kill the cat.

Cats can also be infected with Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). FeLV is a retrovirus that causes terminal cancerous and noncancerous diseases. Fortunately, you can try using detergent and bleach, as well as warmth and drying to cure the virus. The virus is spread by saliva, tears, urine and feces of an infected cat. Unlike the other two diseases, it will not live that long in the environment and it is contagious only when the infected cat stays with another cat for a long period of time.

Worms are also another problem to cats and this is caused by a fungus infection that is spread by spores. Because it is self-limiting illness, you don't need to do anything to make it disappear. It will eventually go away, but it may take a few months.

If your cat is overweight, it probably already has feline diabetes. The symptoms of this disease include excessive urination and thirst plus noticeable weight gain or loss. Vets are not sure what causes this, but there have been some scientific studies that have shown a connection between pancreatic disease, hormonal imbalance and certain medications.

The symptoms of most of these diseases are very similar. These include diarrhea, vomiting, lameness in one leg lasting for longer than 5 days. Also decreased vision, excessive panting, a seizure, blood in the stool or urine, hair loss, and persistent coughing or gagging. To find the proper answer, your cat needs to see a vet to be tested.

Your veterinarian will sample blood, urine and feces. Any input from your observations will also help. When results of the tests are finalized, proper treatment can begin. Keep in mind that each case varies, and what works for one cat may not work for another.

Your cat can remain healthy if given constant attention. This can be done by feeding him high quality food and providing fresh water. In addition, your cat needs proper exercise, grooming, and make sure your pet stays indoors. And importantly, regular visits to the vet.

Cat Litter Choices For Today's Cat by by Nancy Shepherd

At first, there was dirt. Cats meandered freely, scratching a "cat hole" wherever they pleased, then overlaying their business to elude discovery by predators. The really favored cats roamed near a house with children, where there was often a sandbox for the kids to play in. This sand was the high end dirt of the early days -- dirt that was simple to dig in, quick to scratch over, and relatively easy to shake from the paws.

Then cats relocated inside, and it was people who decided where they should do their digging and dumping, and what they should do that digging and dumping in. The first litter boxes held the typical well-known dirt or sand. The cats were content enough with the familiar materials, but people tended not to like the stink or disorder. It just didn't absorb very well and had to be adequately changed daily.

In 1948 Ed Lowe, a dealer in industrial absorbents furnished his neighbor some absorbent clay substance for use in her cat's litter box. It worked a lot better than sand, and before long more people wanted to try it. Lowe developed and perfected the product, offering it as Kitty Litter, a brand name that has become a generic reference to any cat litter. The commercial cat litter trade was born.

Clay Cat Litter

Clay litters have been common for a long time. They are very absorbent and present modest odor management. Clumping types produce a consolidated mass when wet, and are merely scooped out of the box for disposal, leaving the remaining litter for further use. A few people worry that clumping litters could provoke digestive troubles if a cat, especially a kitten, were to consume it, as the particles would swell and produce a mass in the digestive tract.

Clay cat litters are weighty and can be dusty. Disposal of the used litter can be a concern. The majority just bag it up and send it out with the garbage, but that adds a great deal of material to currently over-stressed landfills on a yearly basis. Criticisms of clay litters are that it is a strip-mined substance, and that it includes silica dust, which is viewed as a carcinogen in California.

Crystal Cat Litter

The new kid on the cat litter block is silica gel crystals, made from silicon dioxide sand. Crystal litter is very easy to carry, highly absorbent, and dust-free. It's more high priced than other litters, but it can last a long time; with a daily stirring to expose more of the porous granules to the urine, it can take in wetness for up to a month before needing to be changed out.

Crystal litters manage odors well, but do not produce good clumps. Many cats don't like the texture of crystal cat litter, and caretakers worry that as a super-absorbent, it could be a health hazard if consumed. And again, disposal of the used crystals comes down to the landfill.

Biodegradable Cat Litter

The concerns of clay and crystal cat litters are triumphed over with natural, biodegradable cat litters. The natural litters curb odors effectively and are non-toxic, absorbent, and mostly dust-free. Moreover, the degradable nature of natural litters assures they can be composted in the backyard to create a soil amendment for decorative plants in the landscape. If space for composting isn't accessible, these cat litters are safe to flush into the septic system, so there is no disposal dilemma. This is a type of cat litter that won't stack up in the landfill.

Biodegradable litters are created from renewable plant elements, such as grain, wood, or paper, usually recycled or produced from a by-product of other plant uses. They are entirely safe for both cats and humans.

Cat litter has come almost full-circle, from the original dirt in the garden to the newest biodegradable litters that break down back into the earth. It's the best of both worlds, and the environmentally concerned cat will want to use green cat litter to keep the world the best it can be.

How To Keep Your Cat In A Garden

How To Keep Your Cat In A Garden by by Tim Berrisford

A few years ago we moved into a quiet suburban area which backed onto a relatively busy road, but when our daughter begged us for a kitten it was too difficult to deny her. Her first kitten brought her much happiness until one night a few months later she didn't come home, the next day we found her kitten her lying squashed by the road only a 100 yards away from home. Once we had all recovered from these sad times I promised her another cat as long as I could cat-proof our garden.

As we ran one of Britain's leading online pet stores, Easy Animal. I started to research cat containment products for a solution, this was obviously a huge problem as each day we were getting phone calls from other worried cat owners about the best way to contain a cat?

As our garden was contained by walls and fencing at the rear of the property I didn't think this would be too much of a problem, so agreed to my daughter having a new kitten called Maisie. I thought by the time she would be allowed out that I would have a cat proof garden. My first investment was to buy a reel of netting and some wooden stakes which I screwed to the fences and walls, after a weekend of fixing these you can imagine my dismay when within a week the cat just scaled straight up and over. Not to be out manoeuvred so easily I decided that my netting needed to be angled inwards at the top of the fence, so I quickly had some angled brackets made at a friend's engineering works and set aside another day to install.

This seemed highly successful and I was really pleased with my handiwork as the cat seemed beaten at last, that is until the cat decided to scale some 30ft fir trees at the end of the garden. Having spent over £400 on materials so far I was not to be beaten easily and looked at plan B. A friend of mine had told me about a range of cat containment systems manufactured by an American company called PetSafe. I contacted them and soon had a meeting with the lady that runs the UK branch of the company.

She soon explained to me that in America the properties have no boundary fences so these containment systems are the only way to contain cats and dogs within a predetermined zone. Basically the system works by emitting a signal from a wire that is laid around the property, as the cat approaches the zone the cat gets a warning beep tone and if he still approaches the boundary a short burst of static. This short unpleasant sensation starts to teach the cat where he can and can't roam as the small light collar that the cat wears gives the cat the signals to enable them to be trained.

When we installed the cat fence at home I was a little sceptical but couldn't believe how quickly Maisie learned that the boundaries were strictly off limits. By laying the wire on the top of the fence about 6ft from the ground the cat doesn't want to jump over any longer as Maisie gets a warning tone on her collar as she approaches the perimeter. Now we have a cat that can play safely within the garden without any worries at all, I fully realise that these type of containment systems are confrontational in some peoples eyes , but what we are talking about is a life and death situation.

We now actively sell these type of cat containment systems through our website and every day I speak to a cat lover who needs to be able to securely keep their cat in a garden, I can honestly say that these systems saves cats lives and therefore I whole-heartedly recommend them to all cat owners. Lets cut down these unnecessary accidents, for further advice please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Fascinating History of Hairless Cat Breeds by by Cody Holpp

'Dogs have owners while cats have staff,' goes a famous saying. Ancient Egyptian royalty considered cats as a holy blessing, while there have been instances during medieval Europe, where beautiful women were judged on their ability to look similar to cats.

Cats come in different breeds, sizes and colors. One of the most mysterious cat breeds is the hairless cat, which appeared from time to time in Europe and United States. Such was the fascination for this breed that many rumors popped out from time to time.

History of Hairless Cat Breeds

The earliest accounts of hairless cats have been in the 18th century in South America, when some locals reported about seeing a strange looking cat, without hair. Later, some people in Paraguay confirmed seeing a species of cats which were hairless, but some locals were not sure if the cats they saw were a new hairless species of cats, or some other small wild animal.

Mexican Hairless Cat Breeds

Later, in the early part of the 19th century, some local Pueblo Indians gifted 2 cats (a male and a female) to a couple from New Mexico region. These Pablo Indians claimed that the cats were survivors of the Aztec cat breed; the point is debated till today.

Unfortunately, the male cat died while the female cat was taken to Europe during the year 1903. Some decades later, there were news bytes of hairless cats being paraded in cats shows in Europe and United States, but these events didn't have any substantial evidence attached to them.

One of the most fascinating and earliest hairless cat breeds was the Mexican hairless breed, which according to various cat lovers went into oblivion, without providing any chances of mating. Also, whenever there was a sighting of a hairless cat couple, those folks somehow mysteriously never mated, or for that matter, if they did mate, they didn't bring any offspring to this world.

Later Breeds of Hairless Cats

Second to the Mexican hairless, the Canadian hairless cats managed to maintain a consistent suspense filled state of affairs. Dubbed as the Sphynx or Sphinx, their traits are contributed by a recessive gene. With much interest from the general public, breeding of these Sphynx cats was in full swing in the 70s, but stopped later. The last lot of this breed was sent to Holland but unfortunately, this pair didn't provide any offspring and some medical journals funnily confirmed that the Sphynx series was lost to fate and lack of mating based chemistry.

But, with active interest, breeding and help from science, many other hairless cat breeds surfaced like Donskoy cat breed, Don Sphynx, Elf cat etc. Medically, hairless cats also have a very small layer of hair.

Hairless cats are different, and they require different level of care as well. Their skin often feels oily as these cats don't have hair to distribute or absorb oil. These are mostly indoor cats, as wind and sun take a toll on its skin. Usage of pet sun block is advised when these cats venture out. Fur lined basket, bed and dressing works well with these coatless cats.

Lastly, these cats are special and hence need special care.

It Is Possible To Give Your Cat A Bath, And Come Away Scratch Free by by N Cinneide

Although your cat doesn't realise it right now, after some tender loving care and a little shampoo, he will appreciate it.

Cats hate water, that much is easy to see as he lashes out at you with his claws when he gets anywhere near it. Why would someone want to bathe their cat, then?

Well, they are dirty and can become flea infested just like a dog, so they do need them. Sometimes, you'll just have to do it. The key is to not bathe your cat more than once a month as you will damage his skin and his hair if you do so more than that. And, you can do it.

The Supplies

To do the task, you'll need some supplies. The very least you will need are two cloth towels, a pet safe shampoo and conditioner, a sponge and a sprayer to attach to your skin nozzle. No sprayer? Then use a pitcher of water and keep it near the sink. You should try to have a non skid mat there as well to help your cat feel better about standing in the water.

A scared cat is hard to control. So, if you plan to wash him in the tub, make sure to shut the door to keep him from getting out into the rest of the house.

What To Do

Put the mat at the bottom of the sink or tub. Add about two or three inches of warm water to the bottom and carefully place the cat in. Talk to him quietly and reassure him that he's okay. More than likely, he'll settle down within a few minutes. Now that he's calm, you can wet him down. Use the sprayer but if this scares him, you'll need to pour water over him using the pitcher. A word of warning, do not pour water on his head. You'll clean his face later.

Now he's wet. You can squeeze a palm sized amount of shampoo and massage the shampoo into his coat. Use slow, calm motions and he'll relax and maybe even will enjoy it. Once he is lathered, you'll need to rinse him off. Make sure to get all of the shampoo out of his coat as anything left on him will irritate his skin.

Next, do the same with the cat's conditioner. This step is optional if the cat has short hair. If the cat isn't too upset, though, you should try to use it on all cats.

Once his body is clean, it is time to do his face. Dampen the sponge and use it to carefully wipe down his face. Pay attention to the area around his eyes too.

After The Bath

Now, he's done. Wrap him up in the towels and blot off as much of the water as possible from his body. Use a dry towel as a second blotting tool. Now, he'll finish the job himself. For those who have a long haired cat, you can use a blow dryer at the very lowest setting if you keep it continuously moving so that you do not burn him. Now, you have a clean cat and hopefully no wound marks to show from it.

Your cat will thank you for his bath, and you will both enjoy each other's company more, next time you snuggle down in front of the fire.

Claim Your Share Of Happiness With Charming Tonkinese Cats by by Cody Holpp

'The words cat and cute are not only similar to hear, but are quite similar literally as well,' said a former TV presenter. Like dogs, cats also have a special place in the drama called life. Cats, like happiness come in different shapes, sizes and colors. One such colorful breed is the Tonkinese cat.

Like the Canadian hairless cat, the Tonkinese cats have originated from the lands of Canada. This is a medium sized cat breed, a cross between 2 beautiful cat breeds - the Siamese cat breed and the Burmese cat breed.

History of Tonkinese Cats

'History is a half right- half wrong fable agreed upon.' Same way, there are some instances which connect this recent breed to historical era of the 19th century. Some people believe that these cats often trace their roots back to the 'Wong Mau' miracle cat (a small sized walnut colored cat, courtesy - Dr. Joseph Cheesman Thompson, 1930). Most other journals and experts put the start of breeding as late 19th century, which is widely accepted. All in all, the exact history is debated but these cats aren't as old as some other species.

Name Game

This cat breed was earlier called as - Tonkanese which got later modified to Tonkinese. Origin of its name is the namesake island in the musical South Pacific. This fictitious island was special because there was no discrimination done to half-breeds and hybrids. These are commonly known as Tonks, while promoting, and also during cat shows.

These beautiful Tonkinese cat breeds often find mentions in English novels, movies, documentaries and magazines. Known for their friendly nature, these cats are often classified as the perfect apartment cats. In general, these cats are lively with gregarious personalities and form one of the bubbliest pets. With an appealing individuality, the Tonkinese cat breed is often considered to have taken good qualities of both, Siamese and Burmese cat breeds. Even its meow is slightly different than other breeds, and its voice is often an epitome of affection. The Tonkinese cat carves and returns affection very openly.

The trim and muscular cat appears lighter than what they actually are. They have the following physical features:

- Distinctive oval-shaped paw
- An adapted wedge shaped head
- Large ears which are almost set to the outside of their heads
- Muscular appearance

There are 3 main patterns in Tonkinese cats, solid, pointed and mink. They come in 4 attractive colors and their color pattern darkens with age. The solid pattern is the most common type of Tonkinese cat pattern around.

One of the major reasons why these cats appear affectionate is their curiosity; these Tonkinese cats are unusually curious, even to the simplest of things like a human finger. These folks are playful and mischievous and like humans or other Asian cat species around.

These cats form great pets and many owners claim, there is a sense of pleasure when these are around. Cats, in general emit happiness and Tonkinese ones are no different.

If You Seriously Want Your Cat To Be Happy And Healthy, You Must Help With Grooming by by N Cinneide

Although your cat may take the time to clean himself through licking his paws and face, he does still need you. Cats don't want to be dirty and they need you to help them stay clean.

Grooming your cat has to happen. You need to do it to remove the loose hair on the cat.

Brushing

Brushing your cat's hair will keep it from ending up in his stomach. It is not easy to digest and often the cat can only get rid of it through hairballs. If they can not spit them up, they are likely to clog the intestinal tract. Grooming can also remove dirt and debris from the coat. It can help you to check for fleas and ticks too.

Many cats do not hate to be groomed. It is much easier to become accustomed to it if you start when he is still a kitten. Gently brush or comb over the coat, following the fur from the neck to the tail. If he becomes annoyed with you, stop and play with him for a few minutes. When he is relaxed again, go back to it. Don't groom the face or paws with the brush though.

Those who do not like to be brushed can still be groomed with a different tool for example the grooming glove. When your cat is in a good mood, the kitty will not mind the massage. The glove is working to remove the hairs and the debris from the cat though. Most cats won't even mind if you do this to their face either.

Lastly, if you have a cat that has longer hair, take the time to insure he is brushed. Those who are not will end up with matted hair. To remove matted hair, the animal is likely to need to be sedated and shaved. This is an awful experience for him so insure that you keep his coat clean and brushed thoroughly instead.

Check Eyes, Ears, Claws and Teeth, too

When you do brush him, make sure to check his eyes and his ears too. They should be clear and bright without anything in the corners. The ears should be clean and pink. Dirt that gets into the ears can be a sign of ear mites. These can cause the ears to shrivel up and your cat to lose his ability to hear. Make sure to bring this to your vets attention.

If your cat has not been declawed, you'll need to remove the hooks on the ends of the claws. Not only will this ruin your clothing or upholstery, but it will also hurt your cat if he becomes snagged on something. The cat's teeth should be free from tartar buildup too. You'll need to keep them healthy by brushing them once a day with a finger tip brush and pet toothpaste.

If you follow these simple tips it will help your cat to be happy and healthy, and full of life.

Can You Really Train A Cat? Is It Worth The Trouble? by by N Cinneide

Cats are notoriously independent and have a mind of their own. Can you really teach a cat new tricks?

Cat owners often think that their cat is just too moody to listen. Some owners feel their cats are un-trainable simply because they are arrogant. The fact is many times pets don't obey because they don't understand what you want from them. So, if you have tried to train your cat, you may not be doing it right.

Good Kitty

Training your cat takes time and patience. It takes more of that then it does with a dog. A sure fire way to get results is to use positive reinforcement. Whatever you do, don't scold your cat because she is likely to just misbehave when you aren't looking. Instead, praise good behavior.

Any cat can learn. It is wise to first start when the pet is young, about eight to ten weeks old. But, the pet will do well at any age.

To Get Started

How do you get started? The first thing to start with is training your cat to come when called. Hold your cat's favorite treat and call his name. You'll want to make sure he's in a good mood. You'll also want to make sure there isn't a lot of noise either. Distractions will slow down the cat or confuse him. Decide on one command and use it solely. The command should be short and easy to say. For example, come kitty works well or here kitty will work too.

Now, get down on her level by sitting or kneeling on the floor. Give the command. Make sure your voice is exciting and happy. When the cat comes to you, reward him with the treat. Also, insure that you praise the cat as well. Then, move away and do the same thing again. The goal is to use the same tone of voice and the same command. Work on it for no more than ten minutes. If the cat is bored or frustrated, stop for the time. Try to do this two or three times a day for about a week. Once he gets this command, you can move on to others.

Some things that your cat needs to learn for his own well being are necessary to teach any and all cats. For example, he needs to learn to tolerate a harness and a leash in case you need to travel with him. Also, the cat should learn to use a crate.

Using a Leash and Harness

To do this, you'll want to start by putting the harness on him. Do not restrain him once it is in place. Praise him for it. Give him a treat for behaving so well. Once he is used to wearing it, attach the leash to it and let him lead you throughout the area. Coax him into following you with treats and praise. Some cats will learn to heel on the leash. But, most will not. All should learn to not panic or to struggle, though when wearing a leash.

The Crate

When it comes to the crate, it can be done a little simpler. Cats like warm dark places so put a comfortable blanket and maybe even a favorite toy of the cat's inside the crate. Give him praise when you place him in it. Then, leave him there for a few minutes. Let him out within three to five minutes. Don't praise him when he's coming out of the crate because you do not want him to think this is the good thing. Make sure to reward him, though whenever he goes in. Leave the cat in the crate a little longer each time. Eventually your cat will be trained well enough to keep him in there.

I hope these simple tips will show you how useful it can be to give your cat a little discipline.

How To Stop Your Cat Scratching And Ruining Your Furniture by by N Cinneide

It's natural for cats to scratch but often it destroys your good furniture. Thankfully there are some things that you can do to relieve the problem.

Many people watch in sadness as their cat destroys virtually everything that he can get his claws into. You can improve this behavior. To do so, you need to know why he is doing what he is doing.

Cats were hunters. They needed those sharp teeth to help them to climb trees and to leap down on their prey. Although your cat is not likely to be pouncing on their dinner anymore, they still instinctively need to sharpen their claws and that is exactly what they are doing on your furniture. The scratching that they do is a way of trimming their nails and it removes the old outer part of the claws. Another reason they are ruining your home is because they know it to be their territory. They release a scent from special glands in their paws which helps them mark the area as theirs. They also do it because they are working the kinks out of their body as well as burning some energy.

Before you head off to have him de clawed, you may want to try out some of the alternative methods of preventing the scratching.

One way is to provide them with scratching pads or posts. There are a wide variety of them available including those that are part of a cat condo. You can even make your own by using two foot high section of a four by four, two foot by two foot piece of heavy plywood and a carpet remnant. When you have one of these, take it and put it right next to his favorite piece of furniture to destroy. Then, gradually move it away from the furniture as he gets accustomed to it.

You can also use a pet repellant spray such as Bitter Apple on the furniture that the pet is clawing at. Take the time to test the spray on a non visible area of the furniture before using it though. Or if you do not want to spray the furniture, then cover the material with aluminum foil or tape that is placed sticky side up. The cat will not like the material and will turn to the scratching post instead.

Some cats just can't seem to stop. For these, de-clawing becomes the best option. If your cat stays indoors, you can have their claws removed. There are some risks involved and the procedure can be painful for him. Those who would like to avoid this like to use nail caps instead. These are applied as false nails would be to the cat's nail.

If your cat is a scratcher, do what you can to stop him before you have him de-clawed. If this becomes the best option though, it may be better than having your furniture torn up!

I hope that some of these simple tips help you save your furniture from cat attack without stopping you cat from enjoying life.

Where Does Your Cat Nap? Make Him As Comfortable As Possible by by N Cinneide

Giving your pet his own snoozing area gives you the ability to take back all of the space in your house that he has taken over. You may even want to give him several places to call his own to keep him happy!

You'll find a cat bed that fits your tastes, and your pets, because there are so many out there to choose from. You'll find a colorful cat bed in fun pet prints that will add a touch of whimsy to the room you put it in. You'll find designer brands to choose from as well. You can also choose based on how the bed feels too.

Many cat beds have a pillows made of fleece to keep them warm. They are oval shaped and have high sides or they may be completely enclosed. Cats like to find a secure, warm spot to rest. For many, getting into the tight warm couch cushion seems like the ideal place.

You will find that some beds you can choose from are heated as well. If the cat spends time on the porch or in other chilly areas, you may want to give him one of these heated beds to warm up with.

Have you purchased a great bed for your cat but he's ignoring it? Don't be surprised at this. If he just doesn't seem interested, add a catnip toy to the bed to attract him to it. Make sure that you place it in a cat friendly location too which will help to make it appealing to him. Cats don't want to nap in low places so you may want to put the bed on an end table or platform that is just a bit off the ground. You'll need to keep it from being in the midst of heavy people traffic as well. He needs to be able to relax and sleep there or he won't want to be there.

Does your cat shed? Place the nap mat where your cat normally sleeps and then store it when you have guests. The cushions that are under the mat will then be hair free.

Some pets enjoy a perch. These are padded shelves that have become very popular. You can attach the cat perch to your windowsill so that the cat can look out the window at the birds or just bathe in the sun.

More than one cat can means more than one bed as cats are territorial and don't like sharing their beds. You may be able to look for a kitty version of a play gym or a cat condo. These allow several cats to nap in elevated spots. And, the cat condo has areas where they can climb and sharpen claws.

If your cat likes to nap on your couch cushions, giving him a bed is the ideal way to make him comfortable and provide him with a place other than your furniture to nap on!

Why Do Cats Fight

Why Do Cats Fight by by Jason Swanson

If you have a household with multiple cats, you know that cat fights do happen. Even if you cats generally get along, at times, they can still fight. While humans may not completely understand why their kitties are fighting, cats have their reasons for fighting. Some of these reasons are similar to the reasons that humans have disputes. Cats express their discontent with other cats by picking fights. The reasons why cats fight can help you determine how to prevent your cats from fighting in the future.

Fighting for their territory: Many cats fight because of their territory. One of the reasons that cats fight is because they feel like an unwanted cat has invaded their territory, even if it is a cat that has lived with them for a long time. Cats are much more territorial than dogs and the gender of the cat has very little to do with it. Contrary to what many people believe, female cats are sometimes just as territorial as their male counterparts are. If you have two cats in your home, you might notice that one cat hisses and swats at the other whenever he feels his territory has been invaded. This can also happen if you bring a new cat into the home. They are simply defending their territory.

Social ranking: Either male cats frequently threaten and fight with each other for social ranking or despite what you may think; even neutered males may do this. If you have multiple cats, especially more than one male cat, one cat is usually considered the "alpha male" and will be at the top of the cat hierarchy. Two cats might posture their bodies, then begin howling and screaming at one another. If one of the cats walks away or backs down, then the catfight is usually avoided. However, if neither one wants to throw in the towel and surrender, then one cat will attack the other by jumping forward and attempting to bite the neck. The other cat will fall on his back and tries to bite or scratch the attacker with its hind legs. The two cats might go through this several times before walking away. There are usually no injuries sustained in these kinds of fights. You may even notice that kittens or young cats play with one another this way. Most of the time, you will not need to interfere.

Aggression: Cats also fight as a result of some kind of redirected aggression and this is quite common, especially with indoor cats. Your cat might be looking outside the window at another cat or dog crossing the yard. Your cat begins to feel territorial and aggressive at this cat, but since this other cat cannot be reached, he may instead attack the other family cat. Another example is if you are giving your cats treats. One cat may reach the treat first and begin eating. The other one wants a bite, but the cat that is eating may become aggressive over the treat and begin to swipe or yowl and the other cat.

If you find your cats fighting occasionally, you should know that this is common and quite typical of cats. Most of the time, you will be able to tell whether or not your cats are fighting for "blood" or just playing around. The time to stop a fight is when it gets nasty otherwise; allow your cats to work it out themselves. If you feel the need to stop a catfight, then you should do it carefully. Even the most loving cat can bite or scratch you in aggressive passion. To stop a fight, you should make some kind of loud noise, such as a handclap. Since cats are startled by loud noises, they will both stop to see what is making the noise. You can also spray water on them to interfere with the aggressive behavior..

When you find your cats fighting, it is best not to punish the cats for their fight. Cats do not understand punishment and fighting is a natural instinct in cats. The best thing to do is only interfere when necessary. If you find your cats are fighting more than they should, it is time that you find out why. Do they fight over a litter box, a food bowl or a prime window location? Make sure each kitty has his or her own "things" and a place to retreat when they feel overwhelmed by other pets in the house. This will go a long way in preventing real catfights.

The Important Stages In A Kitten's Life: How Fast Will Your Kitten Grow

The Important Stages In A Kitten's Life: How Fast Will Your Kitten Grow by by N Cinneide

Just like having a child, it can be incredibly fulfilling bringing a kitten into your family and watching it grow up. It takes only a year for your cute little kitten to mature into a cat. It can seem hard to believe but it will happen fast. Being prepared is the goal here. So what are the key milestones for a young cat?

The First Moments

Kittens are born blind and they are completely dependant on their mother. The first stages will involve learning to eat and then growing. The kitten's eyes will open and he will want to explore. At four weeks old, he is romping around shakily with his siblings. At this time he can begin to learn to use the litter box and should start to become a social animal. In the wild, the kitten's mother will start to supplement his diet with dead mice and other small pretty. But, you may want to give him some soft kitten food or some dry food that is softened a little with water.

Six Weeks

He's now six weeks old and he is more than ready to explore the home. If he's indoors, he will move from room to room. A feral kitten will follow his mother when she goes to hang out with the other cats. These cats will still receive mice from their mother, but they aren't dead anymore. Instead, the kitten has to learn to hunt the animal. Those who are eight weeks old will be completely weaned from their mother and are ready to go to a new home.

The Next Months

Through the next several months, the cats will grow really fast. You'll need to get them in to be vaccinated at this time so that they are healthy and strong. They will begin to learn what they have to do to live with their families and learn which behaviors are okay. You can teach your kitten his name as well as a few simple commands now. If the cat has long hair, make sure to get him used to allowing you to groom him, although the cat's coat doesn't need to be brushed just yet.

Sometimes, cats will suddenly develop a bad attitude. Believe it or not this is an adolescent stage for them. This happens when the cat goes from being a kitten into being a mature cat. Sounds just like children, right? This will happen around the fifth to six month and may last until the cat reaches a year old. They will still be playful but may get carried away to play too aggressively. If your cat is not neutered at six months of age, he will be mature enough to reproduce now. Neutering the cat will help this stage of his development go more smoothly. At six months, the cat looks the way he will look as an adult even though he may still become larger.

Adulthood

Just like humans, adult cats will continue to go through stages. But, these stages can be dealt with quite easily. And, unlike that mid life crisis you may have, the cat isn't likely to go out to purchase a sports car at this age!

If you take care of your kitten's health as he grows into an adult cat you will have a fulfilling relationship that will bring both you and the cat great satisfaction.

Understanding Cat's Body Language by by Tauqeer Hassan

Cat are domestic animals, they are not only sociable but also fashionable. Domesticated cats are inclined to form cat communities based on sharing of love and food. Female cats bond with each other very quickly that is quite different from humans. Cats are very territorial just like dogs. A sexually active male is dominant and has the biggest territory. Male dominated cat colonies may be a lot bigger than territories ruled by female cats.

Cats don't always cry because of being hungry for food but in many cases they cry because of being hungry for a sexual partner. Because cats are social animals, they cry because they want to have company. Cats may not cry every time but they may chatter or mumble. It's really scary to hear cats chattering like old women. They should be listened and one must talk back. Cats love when its master speak out a few comforting words.

Meow does not mean that the cat is crying but it is simply a greeting. A cat's cry may depend on what they are looking for, it can be championship or sexual relationship. Cats may cry because of boredom on rare occasions. Cats also need rest and recreation. Cats get stressed when they are ignored, it can be given a name and called, it can be given a pat on the head, it should not be kicked when it wraps itself around its master's leg and it will simply go away when it will feel that its master has had enough. If one cares for its cat then one has to be there when the cat calls.

A cat follows its master around because of a connecting feeling. Cats look upon its master as a second mother. Even if a cat is old, they never ignore the feeling of being attended and cared for.

Cats use a variety of sounds like mimicking to communicate with one another. They are very moody and they can't be made like oneself all the time. They have varying body language signs which you can tell by the way their tail, ears, paws and body are positioned.

There are many ways by which a cat can be stopped from crying like setting up playful activities with the cat, not ignoring it, taking it to a walk and feeding it regularly. A cat knows how to take advantage of its master's feelings because they can read them.

A person will relax more when having a relaxed reline on the lap, this moment regulates the blood flow and calms the heart.

Why A Cat Tree Is Good For Your Cat by by TammyThomas

Cats Need Space Too

Cats have lots of energy. They are naturally curious, too. Keeping them in an area where they can't climb, scratch, play and explore can leave them very frustrated. This can cause them to use your furniture and shelving as scratching posts and climbing spaces. We all know what that means, shredded furniture and picture frames or decorations on the floor. Not to mention how many times have you come home to find your cat on top of the kitchen cabinets. Give your cat a place to exercise and play away from your furnishings. Cat trees offer the best solution for that. They allow your cat to feel like they have a space that's all theirs.

Cat Trees - The Substitute Tree

As I said before, cats LOVE to climb. They have a natural instinct to climb, just like their larger cousins in the wild. A cat tree is a great way to keep your kitty happy. And as their name states, it's a tree built for your cat. There are many sizes and styles of cat trees available. Some have lots of perches and sleeping spaces while others are smaller with less hiding spots. You can even get ones with hanging toys for your cat to enjoy too. Cat trees have multiple posts for scratching and exercising their paw muscles. It also gives them a place to leave their scent. While the perches offer them the heights they seek to feel just like their outside climbing a tree.

Choose The Best Size For Your Home

Cat trees are available is lots of heights and sizes. Smaller units are great if you have limited space while larger units offer more perches and hiding spots. Don't be afraid to buy a larger cat tree. Keep in mind that your kitten is going to grow. As it grows, it will also want more space to explore as well as new heights to reach. Taller cat trees offer the height your cat seeks while only taking up the floor space of a smaller unit. Most units offer sisal wrapped posts and carpet or plush lined condos. While older cats tend to nap more, remember younger cats will be looking to play. Many cat trees offer dangling toys for playful pets as well as the condos and climbing tunnels. Be sure to get one with a couple scratching areas. Once your cat has chosen one of these areas, they should start to leave your furniture alone. If you have multiple cats, look for one with more levels and hiding spots so they all can play and relax together. No matter the size of the cat tree you choose, your cat will be sure to love it.

A great cat owner knows that to keep your cat happy, you have to keep them busy. Cat trees offer your cat a playground all their own within the safe walls of your home. Make your home a cat friendly space by adding a cat tree for your kitty.

The Fascinating History of Hairless Cat Breeds

Things You Should Know About Cat Food by by Jillian Smith

Cat Food Info #1 Cats Need Protein in their Cat Food

The cat food you feed to your cat should always be rich in protein. This generally should come from meat, poultry or fish. Many cat food brands advertise chicken, beef, and tuna flavored cat food because they know that cats need protein and cat owners are looking for quality cat food. However, you need to make sure the cat food you buy has a sufficient amount of cat food regardless of what flavor it is.

Cat Food Info #2 Cat Food with Taurine

Also check the cat food you typically buy for an amino acid called taurine. This particular amino acid is very important in the overall health of your cat, and your cat will eat as much food as it has to in order to supplement this particular amino acid. So, if you are buying cheap cat food that does not have the proper nutrients your cat will eat a lot. If you buy a nutrient rich cat food then your cat will eat little and save you more money while still getting proper nutrition.

Cat Food Info #3 Canned Cat Food or Dry Cat Food?

Many people do not know whether they should buy canned or dry cat food, or whether it even matters. Because of this, many people simply buy the cat food that is most affordable or convenient for them. This is actually a mistake. Cats should be fed a mixture of cat food. The dry cat food should be given for free feeding, especially if you are away on vacation or out for the day. Canned cat food should be supplemented at other times as well because it has water in the food and significantly more protein than the carbohydrate rich dry cat food. Not to mention the same food over and over might bore your cat and cause him to stop eating that cat food altogether.

Cat Food Info #4 Avoid Cat Food Fillers

Cats need to eat a cat food that is rich in protein, so make sure the amount of fillers is kept to a minimum. Carbohydrates are not essential for a cat's existence, so don't buy cat food that is full of them. Instead, read labels and buy cat food that is not filled with fillers and other byproducts.
